How To Make Vegan Jam In 10 Minutes: A Homemade Vegan Jam Recipe

Since summer is at the corner, and we all feel like getting up earlier, jumping out of bed, have a nice breakfast and run to the beach, let’s have a look at one of my favorite ways to have breakfast:  Fresh Coffee, freshly squeezed orange juice and some toasted bread with some strawberry Jam.

Yes, jam, and I actually make it myself, well, I learned from a friend, and I would love to share this simple 10 minutes recipe with you and show you how to make Vegan Jam with Chia seeds and strawberries.
The Jam is rich in nutrients, full of flavor, with No sugar, no gluten, and no artificial colors; what else can you ask from a Jam?

100% healthy and perfect for spreading on toast or to add to a porridge or yogurt and enjoy a fantastic breakfast before you launch yourself in your busy day.

Preparing The Jam, Why Homemade?

The jam I am going to give you the recipe for is a strawberry flavored jam.

I have chosen strawberries for this jam, but rest assure that you can really do it with any seasonal fruit that you like, make it with oranges or peaches, apricots or cranberries, blueberries or bananas, mangoes or even tangerines.

What I mean, is no matter what fruit you choose the jam will be a perfect  way to start your day and you can use either fresh fruits or even frozen ones, but I do believe that the fresh ones are a tiny bit more special!

The reason I chose to do the Jam at home  is because I was finding more and more difficult to get a good jam in the store that would not have any added sugars, or artificial sweeteners.

Why Chia seeds?

The Chia is a seed that in contact with water generates a gel,  which makes it one of the best  substitute for the egg in many types of  vegan desserts and the perfect gelling agent for homemade jams or jellies.

There are two ways to make  this  strawberries and Chia  Jam:

  • you can prepare it by cooking it
  • you can prepare without any need to cook.

It is up to you whichever method you will decide to go for and will feel more comfortable with.

  • 600 of strawberries
  • 2 1/2  tablespoons of Chia seeds
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Making the Jam using the first method

The jam will be ready in less than 15 minutes.

First of all let’s start by washing the strawberries and cutting  them into small pieces.

Put them in a pot and cook them with the lemon juice on a low heat stirring occasionally and crushing the fruit with the spoon for about 5 minutes.

Once they appeared to be cooked, remove them  from  the heat and stir  the compote blending it together to achieve a creamy like texture.

Next, let’s take the Chia seeds and add them to the mixture crushing everything together

Store the strawberry and Chia jam in a glass jar but leave it half opened and allow it to cool.

You can put it in the  fridge for a  couple of hours before consuming it.

Method 2 –  no cooking required

It will take you approximately 5 minutes to do it this way.

Wash the  strawberries  and put them in a blender together with the Chia seeds
Blend it for a couple of minutes until you acquire the desired texture

Once you are done put the mixture in a glass jar and again store it in the fridge for a few hours before you serve it.

There you go, ready in less than 5, so you can definitely say goodbye to the store jam now!

The jam, is super nutrient, super healthy, with nothing chemical or artificial added to it, it is indeed the best jam you could ever give to your kids.

Little Notes

First of all remember that since we have not used artificial ingredients or sugar, the jam should last you in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.

So when you are making it, do not use an enormous amount of fruits unless you have lots of people to feed because it will not last for too long. and after 3 days you would have to throw it away.

Secondly if the fruits that you have chosen are too ripe or a bit sour and you would prefer a bit more sweetness to it, I guess, you can add some brown sugar or agave syrup or even maple. But remember less sugar is always  the healthier  option.

And lastly, remember, that if you do suffer of diabetes, all fruits –  as you will know – contain fructose as a natural sugar so before eating any jam it is always better to consult with your own doctor.

I hope you enjoy this short and sweet recipes and I wish you all a fantastic day.

  1. Hi Barbara, love this recipe for Jam.
I follow a plant-based diet myself and do a lot of running – especially trails and Ultra Marathons. One of my favourite pre-race meals/snacks is peanut butter, banana and jam toasted sandwich. This sets me up for my run perfectly.
Myself and my wife are jam lovers so to see this recipe and how easy it is to make I think I will put it on my list of things to make.
I like the point about the Chia seeds being a substitute for the egg. My wife uses them a lot when baking cakes – tastes so much better when it’s dairy and sugar-free in my opinion.
I have bookmarked your site as I’m always on the lookout for great Vegan recipes.
    All the best,

    Hey Barbara,

Wow that looks very delicious, especially the homemade strawberry jam, I think I can pull that off! I love strawberries and I sometimes make my own strawberry smoothie and sometimes a strawberry curry sauce that I learned to do from one of my travels in Thailand (It’s unique and to die for!).

Chia seeds make everything delicious, strawberry jam here I come!

Hi, Riaz, I would love if you could share the strawberry curry recipe, or maybe send it to me on a PM , only when and if you have time. I love curry but never knew of a strawberries curry!

This is a great recipe for summer! I have started to incorporate vegan foods into my diet as I feel that it helps with digestion, though I must admit I am not completely vegan. So this jam is definitely something that I will try on some toast. I like that it only requires 10 minutes of time. Strawberry jam is my favorite! I will probably go with the first method. Thank you for a great post!

This is a wonderful and natural way to make vegan jam in 10 minutes (or less). I have always wondered how to do this and I am so glad I came across your article on the simple steps. My mother used to make all of our jams with the local fruits that grow in the wild in Northern Minnesota, and they were delicious.

Now I think I know how she was preparing them. We would have the benefits of the jams all year long as she would also can some in the old mason jars and store them in a dark dry place in the basement. It is not nearly as hard as one might think.

The chia seeds are a good substitute to the sugars and other ingredients I see in other recipes and I will most certainly be trying this recipe out very soon. Right now I am using some blueberry preserves that are supposed to be all natural ingredients, but you never know. Using your solution, I do not have to wonder any longer. Thanks so much!

Vegan Jam is an amazing dessert that is very healthy to consume due to its lack of industrial sugar. I took it once but was not there during the making. So according to the picture in this review, is it Chia that allows it to form the texture? or is it the fact that we put it in the fridge?

If it is kept at a regular temperature for more than three days, can it still last longer?

    • Barbara S. says:

No Stella, the jam will last just about three days and I would leave it in the fridge when you are not using it. The Chia Seeds will help the strawberries get that consistency and that jelly look like texture but remember being without any artificial colours and chemical ingredients after three days I would rather make a new jar.

    Good afternoon Barbara,

What a great idea to make a jam with Chia seeds. It really is super easy.

I eat Chia sees mixed with 4 other types of seeds on a regular basis. Coconut milk and some Kefir. Later I add different fruits, some Greek yogurt and a spoon of raw honey. That is my lunch nearly every second day.

I do make orange marmalade from my own organic oranges but that takes a whole morning.

I will certainly try your recipe as it sounds delicious.

    Regards, Taetske

Thanks for the recipe. This got me interested as I love consuming jams as a sandwich spread. I will try to follow the recipe (with slight modifications of course) and make a jam myself. And as you suggested, I will include Chia seeds as it helps in fighting premature ageing.I love to have a jam that’s healthy! Something that tastes good and at the same time assures you of good health.

    Hi, Barbara!

Lovely post! Although I am not a Vegan, it is still a great simple recipe for preparing the fruit vegan jam. I love strawberry and other fruits jams. Especially apricots as well.

As I was reading the description of your breakfast, which sounds very tasty, I was thinking of my breakfast as well. I like fried eggs and some tasty bread. Sometimes I eat milk grains and the coffee is always a must. I prefer a cappuccino or black coffee with some milk. There are occasions, I eat toast with jam. In fact, as a kid, I was eating more jam for breakfast, sometimes with butter as well.

The great things about jam are that you can use it for many meals. As a breakfast, a desert, even a “meal in between”, with cookies, all kind of cakes and sweets and much more. it is healthy and tasty.

    Thanks for sharing this post!

    Enjoy the jam!

    Best regards,
